Tryout Details

Understanding the Tryout Process

Our tryout process is meticulously designed to identify and select players who demonstrate the potential and skills necessary to contribute positively to our team. These tryouts, structured around comprehensive drills and team play, play a pivotal role in our team formation strategy. We divide the tryouts by age group, ensuring each participant receives ample time on the court for a thorough evaluation.

Tryout Dates

Our tryouts are scheduled for August, in preparation for the November-April season, and will take place in the Visitation Catholic School gymnasium. We will announce specific dates and times in July on both our Facebook page and website.

What to Bring to Tryouts

To ensure a smooth and effective tryout experience, players must arrive in athletic attire. Essential items include:

  • Athletic wear such as spandex, shorts, leggings, t-shirts, or tank tops
  • Knee pads
  • Volleyball-appropriate footwear (volleyball shoes, gym shoes, or tennis shoes)
  • Water and any personal athletic accessories (arm sleeves, elbow pads, etc.)

Please be aware that adherence to the dress code is mandatory for tryout participation.
The decision regarding a player's eligibility to try out is determined by the SVBC director and coaching staff.

Evaluation Criteria

Our evaluation focuses on a comprehensive range of skills and attributes, including:

  • Serving
  • Setting
  • Passing
  • Attacking
  • Blocking
  • Movement and footwork
  • Attitude and sportsmanship
  • Ability to follow directions
  • Coachability
  • Shagging
To provide transparency, we offer a PDF of our tryout evaluation form on our website, allowing parents and players to understand exactly how evaluations are conducted.

For our competitive travel teams, we’re looking for athletes who are committed to learning, growing, and embracing all aspects of being a great teammate—not just those who can hit the ball the hardest. Attributes like attitude, sportsmanship, the ability to follow directions, and overall coachability play a significant role in the evaluation process. These qualities can be the deciding factors when selecting between two closely matched athletes.
